Foundations Where your journey begins.
Step onto the Pattern Path and get set up for success. You'll prepare your creative space, understand the tools you'll need, and build the mindset that will carry you through. This module establishes a strong foundation so you can move through the course with confidence and clarity.
MODULE 1: GATHERING INSPIRATION
Learn to see the world like a surface designer. You'll actively seek and organize inspiration from around you: colors, textures, shapes, and stories. You'll build a moodboard, develop your collection story, and translate your discoveries into tangible elements of design. This is where your collection begins to take shape.
MODULE 2:
MAKE MOTIFS
This is where ideas come alive on paper. You’ll turn inspiration into hand-drawn motifs: sketching, painting, and exploring the mediums you love as you create the raw material for your collection. Through playful, intentional exploration, you’ll build a body of illustrations that reflect your story and style. You’ll leave with a refined set of scan-ready sketches, prepared to move seamlessly into digitizing and pattern-making.
MODULE 3:
DIGITIZE IN ILLUSTRATOR
This is where analog meets digital. You'll learn to create motifs from sketches, photos, paintings, foraged items, mark-making, and more. Learn how to build a motif library with primary, secondary, and filler elements with hands-on, tactile, and deeply personal strategies. You'll leave with a library of digitized motifs ready to become patterns.
MODULE 4: REPEAT BUILDING
Now it's time to turn your motifs into patterns. You'll learn every type of repeat: tossed, geometric, layered, textured, half-drop, striped, plaid, diagonal, and border prints. I'll show you my exact processes so you can find the workflow that fits you. You'll see my real process unfold and build your own pattern library.
MODULE 5: COLLECTIONS AND COLORWAYS
Learn the art of designing complete surface pattern collections. You'll discover how to weave a story into your designs, create hero prints, coordinates, and blenders, and develop colorways that work together beautifully. By the end, you'll have a cohesive, heartfelt collection that reflects your unique voice.
MODULE 6: INDUSTRY PREPARATION
This is where your collection becomes your career. You'll learn how to choose an industry, license your work, navigate copyright, negotiate contracts, and build a pitch-ready portfolio. You'll leave with a collection and portfolio that's ready to share with the world.
