Day #3: Playing With Color Palettes

In today’s lesson, we’ll create a custom color palette (or several!) in Illustrator! You’ll then use them to color up your illustrations and start dreaming of your repeating pattern. That's what we'll cover in the next lesson!

TIP: A color palette should have around 8-10 colors and move them to your swatches panel. Be sure to include some lights, some darks, and a few neutrals.

CLASS TOOLS + SUPPLIES

• A pencil, pen and/or paint
  
  • Uni Pens
  • Palomino Blackwing Pencils
  • Black Ink
• A few found items like leaves or string - anything that will scan in flat will work!
• White paper
  • Sketchbook
• A scanner (If you don't have a scanner, you can take a photo of it with your phone!)
  • Canon Scanner
  • iScanner
• Adobe Illustrator (You can start a free trial here.)
  
  

WATCH LESSON #3

Once you're happy with the way your illustrations are colored, it's time to start building a pattern. Oftentimes I find it helpful to create mini clusters of motifs to use in my patterns. Don't forget to 'stretch' your motifs by using the duplicate, resize, rotate and reflect tools. In the next lesson, I'll show you how to save + export your pattern and order your very own fabric.
