In the afternoon, I'm going live to show you the opportunity. In the afternoon, I'll show you why this one skill can earn five figures on its own. It took me 12 months to figure out my first repeat, and I'll show you how to skip that year. Then we'll build your map: a personal roadmap from where you are today to your first paycheck as a designer, stage by stage, so you always know your next step.

In the afternoon, I'll walk you through the three paths surface pattern designers use to get paid: print on demand, freelance and art licensing. I'll use real numbers from real designers. You'll choose the one path you'll start on in the next 90 days. Then I'll show you how designers go from a single pattern to full collections on the shelves of the stores they love.

In 2010 I sold one of our two cars to buy myself 18 months. I made 100 patterns in a year, and 70 of them I never showed anyone. Then I signed my first licensing contract, and within another year I had matched my husbandâs salary from pattern design alone.
Iâve been licensing my work ever since. Fabric, wallpaper, rugs, ribbon, curtains, home dĂ©cor, tea towels, and the polka dot print that is still paying me more than a decade after I drew it.
The best part is what came after. Since then Iâve walked more than 200,000 people through this process, and watched thousands of them do the exact same thing.

Hey there, Iâm Bonnie!
In 2009 I was walking down an aisle in my momâs quilt shop, fabric on both sides of me, when I looked at a bolt and realized for the very first time: someone designed this.
I couldnât unsee it. Thousands of patterns in that tiny store, and every single one represented a person who had been paid to create it. I had just graduated from business school. I had no art degree, no followers, no connections, and no money. But I knew I wanted to be one of those people.
The first thing I learned was that brands donât buy drawings.
They buy a very specific kind of digital file. So I had to learn the tech. I filled out half an application to design school, $60,000 a year for four years, and then I closed my laptop and gave myself one year to figure it out on my own.
It took me twelve months to make my first repeating pattern.
Twelve months of stumbling through tutorials built for architects and billboard designers, trying to find the seven steps that actually mattered for pattern design. When I finally made it, I sent it to my mom and we both cried.
Then I did one thing a day for 18 months.
Some days it was fifteen minutes. But I never missed two days in a row, and at the end of it I signed my first licensing contract as a fabric designer. A year later I had matched my husbandâs income.
The thing about me is that I canât stand watching someone do it the hard way when I know the easy way. I learned this alone, with every door closed and every secret held close to the chest. So I decided to spend my career opening those doors.
Today Iâve licensed my work with brands around the world, founded Pattern Magazine (youâll find it in every Barnes & Noble), and taught more than 190,000 people in over 100 countries how to do this. Those seven steps I fought for? Youâre going to learn them in three days.

okay... I'll admit it
I have to admit… when I signed up for the Print & Pattern workshop, I carried a quiet doubt with me. I wasn’t sure I could design a pattern, much less bring it into the world as something tangible, something real, something made by my own hands. And yet… here we are.
It’s simple. It’s humble. But it exists. And so does this new part of me, the part that followed through, that stayed present, that allowed something to emerge instead of turning away in overwhelm.
… something about this experience felt like a turning of the season, a gentle awakening, a shift from hesitation into becoming.
I don’t know what kind of magic Bonnie poured into this space, but it opened something within me. I’m so grateful I listened to the quiet nudge to begin again. This time feels different. This time feels like growth.

This past week has been insightful and challenging. I have learned so much about me and my creativity. Never did I think I’d find a community of creatives that share the same dream, passion and motivation to be their best selves with creating. I am forever grateful to Bonnie and her team for introducing this to me.
This workshop has truly been just that, a revival to my heart and craft. I had no idea what to expect when I joined. To create my own pattern was very challenging and I pushed through it. It took me hours/days and almost giving up but I kept hearing BONNIES voice , “10 minutes of courage”, “show up for yourself”. This encouraged me to not quit. Boy am I happy I didn’t. I DID IT, I created a tossed pattern and it’s going to be on fabric. How wonderful is that? I will get the wallpaper so I can be reminded that I can do this and my dream is tangible and not out of reach. So amazing!

A few things people ask before signing up
How much time does it take?
Three live sessions on Oct. 27, 28, and 29 at 3:00 PM ET, 60 minutes each, plus optional Q&A after. The morning tutorials run 10 to 30 minutes each. Replays are included, so if life gets in the way, nothing is lost.
I can't draw. Is this still for me?
Yes. Especially you. My best-selling pattern of all time is a polka dot. Youâll learn how blobs, scribbles, and scanned leaves from your yard become licensable patterns, and Iâll give you my own artwork to practice with until yours is ready.
Do I need Adobe Illustrator?
For the day two and three tutorials, yes. Adobe offers a free 7-day trial, which covers the whole workshop. Iâll walk you through downloading it and setting it up click by click. If youâd rather just watch, thatâs fine too. The live sessions donât require it.
Do I need an iPad, a drawing tablet, or a scanner?
No. A pencil, paper, and the camera on your phone are all you need. If you have a scanner, Iâll show you how to use it. If you donât, Iâll show you how to take the photo.
What if I can't attend live?
Every session is recorded and posted the same day. Youâll have replay access until Nov. 5. Youâll only miss the daily giveaways, which require being there live.
I've been using Illustrator for years. Is this too beginner?
About a quarter of the people who join us are experienced designers who never learned the workflow specific to surface pattern design. Youâll get the seven-step system, the perspective formula, and the pattern path map. And youâll be done with the tutorials faster than everyone else.
Does this work outside the United States?
Yes. Licensing has no borders. Our students come from more than 100 countries, and companies license artists from all over the world.
Isn't AI going to replace this?
The opposite is happening. Brands are getting real pushback from customers for using AI art, and after sitting down with hundreds of them at the Licensing Expo this year, I can tell you they are actively looking for human-made, story-driven work. Human work is becoming rarer, and rarer means more valuable.
